Elevation – Ten ways to use your One Little Word

Ten ways to use your One Little Word

Hey Tribe

Last week I blogged all about my One Little Word and how to pick your own which you can read here

This week I have ten fabulous ways you can use your One Little Word.

1. Create a Vision Board

The key to your One Little Word is visibility and once I have chosen my word the first thing I do is create a vision board.

Inspiration zone

In the past I have created a vision board within my journals which I looked at regularly. Now that I have my own place I have 2017 and 2018 framed and on top of my dresser which I see as soon as I wake and just before I go to sleep.

I start with a piece of paper the size of my frame, usually the sheet that is between the glass and backing board when you buy the frame, and gather my supplies together. You can get inexpensive supplies for your vision board from The Range, The Works, Poundshops and Ebay. I lay the larger items out and play with the layout until I like it and then I begin sticking, embellishing and adding detail. This year I have also picked a clear colour scheme of pinks, rose gold and metallic which is going to be my colour palette for my projects this year.

So what are you waiting for! Set aside a few hours, gather your materials and make yourself a vision board of your one word for your year. Get creative. Cut up magazines. Draw. Print from Pinterest. Paint. Use scrapbook embellishments. Make it any size you want. Frame it. Bookmark it. Photograph it.

2. Write a Manifesto

Writing a manifesto for your word is a great way to encapsulate exactly what you want from your year ahead. Write it out anyway you want, in a journal, on a post it note or type it. Then review it regularly. I tend to reread my manifesto on Sunday’s when I prepare my journals for the week ahead or if I have a big decision to make. Make your routine work for you.

Manifesto: For me Elevation is about being my best self, An inspiration. Believing in myself. Testing my abilities. Pushing myself. Following my intuition. Inner peace. Alignment. Shedding doubt and worry, judgement and others opinions. Shining my own light. Spreading love and kindness. Stepping into my best self. Reaching New levels.

3. Create a Pinterest Board

Pinterest is a huge resource! Pinning on your word regularly keeps it fresh in your mind and keeps you working towards it. I create a Pinterest board early on in my word’s creation, so either when gathering my prompts or when I am preparing to make my vision board. I then use my Pinterest board throughout the year, adding regular pins. I add pins containing my word and any which relate to my prompts. You can see this years board here and last years here

4. Post Quotes

Use the quotes on your Pinterest board you’ve created regularly across your social media by posting quotes and so, keeping them visible and you accountable.

5. Books

The year I picked Resilience as my word I also picked five books with Resilience in the title or as the subject and this had a huge positive impact on absorbing this word into all areas of my life.

Here are a few Elevation titles:

1. Elevate Your Life With the Power of Positive Perception by Nkechi Ajaeroh

2. Elevate: The Three Disciplines of Advanced Strategic Thinking by Rich Horwath

3. You Are Enough: How To Elevate Your Thoughts, Align Your Energy & Get Out of the Comparison Trap by Cassie Mendoza-Jones

4. Elevate  by Thando Masiko

5. Designer Crochet: 32 Patterns to Elevate Your Style Paperback by Shannon Mullet-Bowlsby

Search on Amazon and GoodReads to see what books you can find and don’t forget to add me to GoodReads so I can see too.

6. Music

The same principle applies to music as to books. Find songs with your word in the lyrics or title and create a playlist. Add songs which help you feel your word. Listen to them over and over again.

7. Hashtag search your word

Use Instagram and Twitter to search your word as a hashtag to find others using your word. You can find accounts and users solely dedicated to your word. I frequently search Elevation on Twitter and retweet the decent tweets that I come across.

8. Affirmations

Affirmations are a positive short statement in the present tense that you repeat to bring into your life. Affirmations level up your mindset and attitude. Change your thoughts, change your habits, change your life. Try making three affirmations involving or relating to your word to speak daily.

1. I am working towards better things daily.

2. Every day I take positive steps to elevate my life.

3. I believe in myself.

Louise Hay is the Queen of affirmations so check out her website. I also have a Pinterest board for affirmations which you can look through for inspiration here.

9. Wear It. Decorate It

What better way to make your One Little Word visible then by wearing it? You can have jewellery made up. A bracelet or a necklace. You can also add your One Little Word to your decor, you can have the word printed on a canvas, add it to post it notes, make it into your desktop screensaver (or any device wallpaper!) Surround yourself with your word.

10. Light Box

Spell out your One Little Word and light it up!

So, what is your One Little Word and in what ways will you be bringing it into your life?

Elevation – My One Little Word & How to pick one

Elevation – My One Little Word

Hey Tribe

My One Little Word for 2018 is

What is One Little Word?

I found the concept in 2012 when I had just graduated uni, had a demoralising evening bar staff job, and having just ended a six year relationship I was left feeling completely lost with what I wanted in life. I found a pin about the Ali Edwards Blog and her One Little Word on Pinterest and had some of that life changing magic sprinkled about from then on.

Your One Little Word is a word you set as your guiding principle throughout the year. It will be your focus, it will keep you on track, something you continually work towards, and something to reflect upon day-to-day. The word becomes a part of your life as you make your life more like the word.

How to pick your One Little Word

Your One Little Word is selected based on what you want to bring into 2018. What is it that you want to breathe into existence? Is there something you want to focus on? A state you want to reach?

Your word is personal to you and unique for your year ahead. It doesn’t have to be a fancy word. It just has to work for you.

Usually, when picking my One Little Word, it makes itself known to me. I will repeatedly hear the same word or I will repeatedly come across it online or in books. You may already have a word immediately come to mind for you.

But don’t worry if you are pulling a mind blank. This year rather then a word presenting itself I chose one to represent the visions I hold for this year. I wrote down all of the images, thoughts and goals swirling around in my head as prompts so that I could find word to encapsulate it.

To Me: Higher self. Authenticity. Dignity. Self Love. Self respect. Being True. Levelling up. Stepping up. Glow up. Adventure. Experiences. Progression. Being myself. Eery. Vibrations. Inner guidance. Bigger. Stepping into my space. The answer is in me. Removing barriers. Overcoming. Self care Head High. Self belief.

Elevation came to me as I mulled over the the list whilst knitting socks. I think that counts as mindful meditation!

Grab a piece of paper and jot down all of your prompts and see if a word comes to you. Do this when you are comfortable and in a space where you all not be interrupted.

Word suggestions

Here are some word suggestions (including some of my previous words). Scan over the list and see if anything calls out to you.

Journaling – HGDC Crochet Journal & Planner

I have a journal for pretty much every aspect of my life.

I have so many different journals I’ve created  blog post series to cover them all.

Today I will briefly introduce them all and then show you around the journals I use for HGDC – craft and crochet journals.

‘Journal’ – like a typical ‘dear diary’, for all my emotions, thoughts and moments I want to keep (or never ever repeat ever again!).

Vision journal – Think Pinterest meets real paper. This journal is full of quotes, mantras and affirmations which I flick through when I am feeling negative in anyway + I am also a big vision board fan and made one for my 2017 goals.

Gym journal – I am a massive gym addict #GirlsWhoLift and I use this journal to track my progress, weight gain (yes GAIN), measurements, personal bests, food plans and training sessions.

Book journal – If I have read a book on my Kindle then I just click and highlight anything that resonates and it is added to my clippings. This journal is my physical booky book clippings.

Art journal – sketchbooks, I have a few of these hanging around, with pencil sketches and watercolour drawings on random pages. I would like to add to these but I am not willing to sacrifice the crochet time!

HGDC – I have both a planner  and a journal. The planner has all of my on going crochet and knit projects. The journal contains all my notes and ideas for my blog, social media and a few projects I am dreaming into existence. The rest of this post will delve into this pair with a little tour.

Right now I am using this folder set up which I got from Wilkinson’s for around £3.00. Its a ring bound A5 sized clear cover with dividers, insertable booklets and zip pouches.

The purpose of the HGDC planner is to keep track of all my current projects and projects I am planning in one little handy place. I have found so many pro’s of keeping a crochet planner/journal my top ten are;

1. Keep track of hook sizes, yarn type and place purchased. 2.  Plan WIPS before you start to prevent mass frogging, 3. Note down that amazing idea you have without losing it. 4. Queue the WIPS you want to start. 5. Log progress. 6. Keep track of your yarn stash. 7. Keep printed patterns from Raverly in one place. 8. Proof there is a method in my madness. 9. It looks so cute. 10.Everything is in one place!

The front page has to have ‘HG’ of course and a ton of decoration.

The dividers  are covered in quotes and images  + inspiration making a junk journalling/smashbooking/scrap booking hybrid for yarn.

As added embellsihment I have parts of the super cute packaging from my original Queen G bag that Miki from SFMGS.co.uk sent to me as a moving in present. Go check out her out if you haven’t already for trillions of amazing free mandalas and all the emojis.

Sneak peak: the granny square might be the start of a new WIP using Miki’s idea to create a never ending granny square using the #HGDCScrapYarn Challenge. Progress pictures soon!

The planner has notebooks with squared paper and lined paper. The squared paper acts as graph paper for C2C projects floating around my mind. Yet to materialise in crochet form…

The lined notebook is handy to keep business cards of the indie dyers I buy from, yarn tags with swatches and colour ways noted. I keep notes on the hook sizes I am using because I have eight or nine WIPS and sometimes with delays in returning to a WIP I have forgotten the hook size and then have to resort to stalking my own IG or camera roll to try glimpse it. I have done this numerous times. Such a frustrating use of crochet time.

Oh and here is the cute message from Rosie from @Pixelatlantis when I won her mini skein giveaway.

Fred & George’s Firework Mini by Pixelatlantis

I have also included a yarn colour card for a blanket WIP.  I used the colour card to plan out how many of each coloured square I needed and found it really handy to have with me in yarn shops so I could select complementing colours – or just not double up on a colour I already had stashed. See organised buying. Totally justified.

In the zip pouches I have been storing my new circulars and some gold thread to create glitter yarn. Glitter all the yarn.

I use my HGDC journal as a way to keep all my ideas, thoughts, plans  and to do lists together for a secret project I hope to launch soon. I collect information on everything so I have pages on blogging, social media, accounting, business start-ups, marketing and research. Every other page is a mind dump where I scribble every idea fizzing inside to keep them safe and keep my head clear. I am so excited to share it all and super nervous to top it off.

My HGDC Journal is chock full of inspirational quotes obvs. Currently heavily featuring #GIRLBOSS (a must read).

So that is it for this week. My HGDC planner and journal.

Are you a journaller? Do you keep a crochet or craft journal? Let me know in the comments.

Thank you for joining me on my mini tour lovelies.

Next in the series will be my ‘Journal’ journals. How I use them to stay sane and capture memories. See you then.
